It’s been a while since I’ve done an article where I speak kindly of a coin, but this is one of the rare occurrences that I find something worthy of my praise. I’d like to introduce you all to HunterCoin. This is by far the most interesting and inventive altcoin I’ve seen in the past year, but it has remained largely unnoticed amongst the flood of litecoin clones and pump&dump coins. HunterCoin is a fork of Namecoin that uses namecoin’s protocol not to resolve domain names, but to host a decentralized game that is played on top of the blockchain. Instead of mining, people can earn coins by playing the game.
This is one of the rare coins that I don’t have a lot of negative things to say about. The concept is really cool and unique. A bit silly, perhaps, for a currency, but I have no doubts that this coin will be popular. Even the mining aspect of this coin is unique. It can be mined via SHA256 or scrypt, and has seperate difficulties for each. This means that both ASICS and traditional GPU mining rigs are on equal footing here. Very cool.
However, I do have a gripe with the particulars of how it was implemented. The difficulty adjustment is based off the previous 2000 blocks and because of this, adjusts painfully slow. This caused it to be instamined to a very large degree. With a block time of 60 seconds, there should be about 9000 blocks out there right now… But due to the slow difficulty adjustment, there’s currently 39000 blocks. I generally hate this sort of thing, but I’m willing to overlook it due to the overall uniqueness of this coin.
HunterCoin has an extremely low block reward of 10 coins per minute, and there’s under 500,000 of them out there right now. At the current price of .0017 BTC, this gives it a current market cap of about $550,000. Compared to garbage litecoin clones like KittehCoin and Mooncoin which have over $2,000,000 market caps, HunterCoin is very underpriced in comparison. This is largely because it’s not on coinmarketcap or cryptsy yet, so it has little exposure. When it gets listed, watch the price explode. I’ll be stocking up in the meantime. This coin is a no-brainer for me. Unique concept + low market cap is what I love in a potential investment.
HunterCoin is currently traded over at Poloniex and CryptoRush.
Nice find. That sounds cool, so the only way you can mine it is by playing the game? Hash doesn’t matter at all?
Also you should take another look at Kittehcoin, they have a 10 person dev team now. They are adding tons of features.
Out of the 10 coins per block, 9 go into the game world, and 1 to the miners. There’s also additional mining rewards based on players losing money within the game.
yeah i need to try this lol
Can you write about maxcoin????
it is really interesting..
thank you!
Wow Hazard – if you say it is good it must be.
Cryptocoins must have some use. Namecoin, Gridcoin, Datacoin, Curecoin and now Huntercoin. They all offer something real, and will be the only things left standing when all the shit flows out to the sea. We need data storage, messaging, CPU (BOINC) processing and games. Coins that offer these things will be around forever. Like you say – its a no-brainer.
In a year nobody will remember Kittehcoin, but we will all still be playing Huntercoin. Amen!!!!
Looks like crypto-poker will be next. Pokercoin? Or maybe the human mining in the game will evolve into building things in Huntercoin. And then printing them out with 3D printers?
Anyway. These devs are changing finance, gaming and human society.
You guys really need to take another look at KittehCoin. New features are being added. There is a dev team of ten. Stop making it seem like a shitcoin when you haven’t done your research.
You’re an idiot. You don’t know what scam means and you think a coin having a game makes it worthy of note. No wonder you’re hated.
What’s your coin of choice… Zetacoin? A boring bitcoin clone that brings absolutely nothing new to the table. Hilarious.
I see you have moderation in play so you can have only nice words said about you – fair play.
really impressive
Can’t get myself behind this coin.
Only 16 people supporting it on Cryptsy feature request.
Buckets of complaints from users regarding implementation.
It’s dropped pretty badly since you wrote this article.
I’m sticking with Maxcoin.
Maxcoin… Pump and dump toy of realsolid that had an awful launch. Funny.
Maxcoin is just another copypaste pump and dump coin (So copypaste, in fact, that they forget to change instances of “Blakecoin” within the client. How sloppy). Huntercoin is a unique coin that uses a totally new proof of work method. Which do you think will last longer?
Honestly, I think Maxcoin will last longer. In the end, Hazard, it’s marketing that lives, not quality any more. We all wish it to not be so, but it is. Maxcoin has collosal support for obvious reasons, but Huntercoin is more than half a year old and has zero support.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the concept of Huntercoin and I think Maxcoin is silly, but I feel Maxcoin will be more profitable and that Huntercoin is a waste of money. Have you READ the user complaints? So many people unhappy.
What, are you turning a blind eye to the max coin complaints? Shittiest launch in a while coupled with obvious pump and dump ulterior motives makes for a very unmemorable coin with a short life expectancy.
Every coin has shit launches these days.
There’s a difference between the generic complaints of the crypto community and the unique complaints against a specific coin.
As you’ve said, Huntercoin didn’t have the best launch due to major instamine issues.
Like I’ve said, the age of innovation is dead. People want well-marketed coins because they’re more profitable.
8 months and Huntercoin still isn’t on Cryptsy. It will never be on Cryptsy, and considering Cryptsy is basically the back-alley prostitute of all exchanges, that’s a hell of a negative for Huntercoin which will lead to its inevitable demise.
Maxcoin is another of many trash coins, but it has collosal publicity which means big profitability.
8 months? It was only released less than 3 weeks ago.
Huntercoin is only a few weeks old.
Sheeeeeeet, the announcement was back in Septermber, what the fuck.
how the hell do i play this?
Mikhail Sindeyev,
thecoder behind Namecoin-QT and the main dev of Huntercoin has passed away suddenly, aged 27 from a stroke.

Holy shit. That’s terrible.
Although I feel kinda cold saying this… glad I didn’t invest in HUC.
Poor sod, RIP.
